چکیده

Detailed field mapping of moraines in the Sagarmatha (Everest) region of the Nepal Himalayas indicates that there are four stages of glacial advance. The Lobuche stage moraines are fresh and sparsely covered with vegetation, which contact the dirty terminus of glaciers. The Thuklha stage moraines which are covered with soil and vegetation are located just outside of the Lobuche stage moraines. Both the Periche and the Thyangboche stage moraines which show well weathered and vegetation-covered surfaces lie at the valley far down the glaciers. Comparison with Europe and North America suggests that the Lobuche and the Thuklha stages correspond to Neoglacial redavances which culminated a few hundred and also several thousand years ago. The Periche and Thyangboche stages may be of the Late Glacial and the Last Glacial Maximum. The existence of older landforms, considered to be related to glaciers, suggests that the Khumbu region was also glaciated before the Last Inter-Glacial.

Quaternary fans and terraces in the Khumbu Himal south of Mount Everest: their characteristics, age and formation

Large fans and terraces are frequent in the Khumbu Himal within the high Himalayan valleys south of Mt. Everest. These features are composed of massive matrixand clast-supported diamicts that were formed from both hyperconcentrated flows and coarse-grained debris flows. Cosmogenic radionuclide (CRN) exposure ages for boulders on fans and terraces indicate that periods of fan and terrace formati...

Latest Pleistocene and Holocene glacier fluctuations in the Himalaya and Tibet

The timing and extent of latest Pleistocene and Holocene alpine glacier fluctuations in the Himalaya and Tibet are poorly defined due to the logistical and political inaccessibility of the region, and the general lack of modern studies of the glacial successions. Nevertheless, renewed interest in the region and the aid of newly developing numerical dating techniques have provided new insights i...

Late Pleistocene and Holocene glaciation of the Fish Lake valley, northeastern Alaska Range, Alaska

We reconstructed a chronology of glaciation spanning from the Late Pleistocene through the late Holocene for Fish Lake valley in the north-eastern Alaska Range using Be surface exposure dating and lichenometry. After it attained its maximum late Wisconsin extent, the Fish Lake valley glacier began to retreat ca. 16.5 ka, and then experienced a readvance or standstill at 11.6 0.3 ka. Evidence of...

Late Quaternary Snowline Reconstructions for the Southern and Central Sierra Nevada, California and a Reassessment of the “Recess Peak Glaciation”

In the Sierra Nevada, the “Recess Peak Glaciation” has been previously defined on the basis of deposits exhibiting relative-age characteristics intermediate between those of the Little Ice Age deposits and those of early Holocene or older moraines. In the absence of reliable chronological control, the Recess Peak deposits were assigned an early Neoglacial age. Although numerous moraines in the ...

Reconstruction of the Central Zagros paleo climate and paleo environment

Introduction The study of lake sediments has been widely used in recent decades to identify past climate and environmental changes. Lake basins have significant spatial and temporal patterns and provide valuable evidences of physical and chemical changes. However, in general, the climate of the Holocene period has been more stable and uniform than previous glacial and interglacial periods. How...
